We are sisters and we create kids’ books.
Rina Horiuchi
Rina is inspired by watching her daughter grow each day and seeing the world from her perspective. She hopes her stories can bring a little more joy and peace to the next generation.
K Is for Kindness came about as a reaction to the problems in society and realizing that maybe the world would look different if there were more kindness. She hopes that young readers will be inspired to be kind just because it’s fun and feels good.
Outside of writing, Rina designs online experiences that support youth with mental health challenges. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends and exploring the outdoors.
Risa Horiuchi
Ever since Risa was a child, she has always enjoyed drawing and her early influences were Calvin and Hobbes, Garfield, and the movie, The Great Mouse Detective. This could be why she draws so many cats and mice. She finds illustrating picture books exciting because there are so many ways to show what characters are experiencing and feeling. She is inspired by the work of Gabriel Evans, Daniel Salmieri and Mika Song.
Risa currently lives in New England with her family. When she is not drawing, she is cooking or listening to NPR podcasts and Ariana Grande.
